Baseball’s Newest Trend: Square Batting Cage Nets

For decades, baseball players have always used a standard rectangle batting cage. While the rectangle batting cage will never go away and is still the “standard”, there are additional benefits to a custom cage.

Square Batting Cages – a Trend Worth Keeping

Many high school and college coaches have started adding square batting cages to their facility for a perfectly good reason – immediate feedback. Think of it this way:

  • You can see the flight of the batted ball. Imagine standing in the corner of a large square and being able to see the trajectory of the ball. It becomes obvious quite fast how this can benefit a coach and player.
  •  Ability to work on new drills that can’t be performed in a rectangle batting cage. Work on player’s ability to drive the ball to the opposite field. Bunting drills can easily be done as well with immediate feedback.

Change can be hard, but using a rectangular cage has its merits. The beauty of a square batting cage net is the flexibility to create rectangular lanes within. Many times, the enclosure is wider than 30 feet. Divider nets (most people choose to have sliding nets) can be added to demarcate the area into sections.

For example, if you choose a 60’ x 60’ x 14’ cage, you can easily add sliding dividers at 15, 30, and 45 feet. Now you have four lanes for additional players to work on their swing. When you want the large batting cage, all you have to do is move all the dividers to one side, and voila! You have your square area back.

Between the flexibility and immediate feedback, it is easy to see why this concept has become a favorite choice for many coaches and facilities. Additionally, when you work with Richardson Athletics, you can customize your cage based on your needs. Our nets are durable and ready to handle the constant balls flying into them. The netting is dyed black bonded via an extrusion process. It is then dipped in latex to produce an outer layer of protection. You get the best of both worlds – flexibility and durability – when you choose a square cage.
