How to Properly Chalk a Baseball Field
Whether you have a college game coming up or you are hosting a fun-filled baseball tournament weekend at your facility, chalk lines are the most important step for preparing your field. Chalking out a regulation-sized field does take some time, but by following the proper steps you can create the perfect field finish.
Steps to Chalking a Field
There are a few steps to chalking, which is why you should prepare the field the night before or start several hours before the game to make sure you have enough time. The important steps to follow include:
- Raking – Rake the area around the plates and smooth out any lumps, rocks or holes. You should do this along the base paths as well.
- Set your String – Attach your string to a stake at the back edge of home plate and run it past the right edge of first base all the way to the foul pole in right field. Repeat this step for the third base side but run the string past the left edge of third base. Lastly, always make sure the string is tight. At about the halfway mark between home plate and the foul pole, pop (or lift & drop) the string a couple of times to ensure the line is straight. Leaving slack in the string can cause lines to not be straight.
- Then use your baseball field materials (in this case it is chalk) to follow along the string creating a line that is at least two inches wide. Once the first base side has been completed, proceed with the same step on the third base side.
- Chalk Batter Boxes Last – After the baselines and/or foul lines are finished, use your baseball field materials (chalk) to create the batter’s box. Use a batter’s box template for outlining the batter’s box area (regulation size varies from 4’ x 6’, 3’ x 6’, 3’ x 7’, depending on age group and baseball vs. softball)
