Different Types of Home Plates and How to Install
The home plate has not changed much over the past few decades, even though the game of baseball itself has. Plates are five-sided slabs that are used as the base for measuring the entire infield. In 1885, it was stipulated that home plates be constructed from white rubber, but not all plates today are made from such material. They are, however, still white in color, even though other countries have started to switch to black home plates for an easier view of the ball.
The Different Types
There are a few different varieties of plate styles and each has its own special way to be installed. Some are permanent fixtures, while others can be used temporarily. The most common types include:
- 5 Spike Plates – These are constructed from rubber and feature five removable spikes. The spikes are used to anchor the unit to the ground and allow for quick installation and removal. First, the spikes are screwed into the bottom of the plate. Then, the plate is tapped into the ground using a rubber mallet.
- In-Ground – These feature a waffle-pattern on the bottom and are constructed from all rubber. Very often, field maintenance staff will pack clay or even concrete into the waffle bottom to give the plate some more weight and help avoid any shifting.
- Hollywood Style – These removable options work similar to a base and have an in-ground anchor that the plate slides into. When the plate is not in use, the anchor remains in place and is covered with dirt for safety.
- Wood – These feature a hardwood bottom and rubber cover. They are installed into the ground similar to an in-ground plate.
- Stanchion Mount – These heavy-duty options come with a steel plated bottom and rubber top. The anchor system is driven into the ground and covered with dirt. Then, the unit is slid on top of the anchor and secured into place using a rubber mallet. It can be removed after game play or during the off-season.
