Understanding the Differences in Baseball Home Plates
There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all purchase for this type of baseball equipment. In fact, home plates come in various styles and designs and the one you choose needs to suit your field, age group and overall use. If you are shopping for a new one for your field, you will want to consider all of your options and know how to purchase the right type based on your players’ needs.
What are the Different Types Available?
Baseball plates are categorized by the bottom, mounting and overall appearance. Just a few types you will find as you shop include:
- 5-spikes: This plate features a rubber construction and removable five spikes to help keep the plate into place. It is fairly easy to install and you can remove it when it is not in use so it will last longer.
- In-Ground Home Plate: This type is installed in the ground and does not elevate above the surface. This is useful to prevent trips and falls, but will require a little more in-depth installation. Some of these come with waffle bottoms, while others feature a stanchion mound.
- Hollywood Bury-All Plate: This is one of the more popular styles and one of the biggest sellers here at Richardson Athletics. It features a thick, three-inch plate that is buried into the dirt. It can feature a waffle bottom or no waffle bottom. High schools and college fields will use this type of product for its durability and functionality on the field.
- Throw Down: These are more suitable for turf mats in batting cages or areas where you cannot bury anything because the turf is installed on concrete padding. Indoor facilities often need throw down plates instead of the kind that are buried. The good news is you can quickly remove and replace them when needed.
It may be overwhelming at first to find the right type for your team, but as long as you know the style and options out there, you can narrow down your choices.
